I remember my mother in law working hard in the kitchen trying to create a Shepherd's Pie from scratch.
I also remember the day when she found someone else to make an authentic Shepherd's Pie for not a lot of money.

Technically, an authentic Shepard's Pie consists of left-over food and a lot of potatoes.
The potatoes serve as both the crust and the topping. The left-over food in-between these layers of potatoes is primarily minced meat (beef,lamb) and some vegetables. Shepherd's Pie was meant to be a hearty meal for the
Shepherds' in the English and Irish fields.

These days, we see many versions of the Shepherd's Pie.
I have seen Shepherd's Pie prepared with an actual bread crust. I have seen in prepared with chicken- which can often resemble a pot pie in many ways.

Shepherd's Pie is a very hearty meal when prepared as intended.
This makes sense as Shepherd's Pie was created to fill a belly using the ingredients that were readily on hand. Potatoes were what was most readily on hand and potatoes can fill a belly- and make that belly feel full for a long time.

I am like a lot of people out there who seem to have cut back on meat consumption.

I am always looking for ways to add vegetables to the food that I prepare. And, I like simplicity when I can have it.
Obviously, this is not a true Shepard's Pie as it does not contain lamb. But, this is a nice version for those of us who enjoy our veggies.

5 Ingredient Meatless Shepherd's Pie

5 Ingredient Meatless Shepherd's Pie


A meatless version of a favorite meal.


- 1.Mashed Potatoes- 2 cups (can use prepared flaked version or your favorite recipe)

- 2. Creamy Soup- 1 can Mushroom or other 10-12 ounce can, can be low sodium etc.

- 3. Mixed Vegetables- 1 cup (can use bagged or canned or fresh)

- 4.Milk- 1 1/2 cups (milk of your choice)

- 5.Butter- 1/2 stick, can use alternative

- Use an optional 6th ingredient- seasonings of your choice(pepper, garlic, cumin, salt or even parsley)



- 1.Preheat your oven to 400, prep a baking dish or 9" pie plate for nonstick.

- 2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine your vegetables and soup.

- 3. Meanwhile, in a 2 qt or similar saucepan, combine together your butter and milk, warm on medium heat.

- 4. While your butter and milk are warming, pour your warmed vegetables and soup into your baking dish/pie plate.

- 5. When the milk and butter begins to boil, remove from heat and stir in your prepared potatoes.

- 6. When potato mixture has become lumpy/hard to mix spoon it over the the vegetable/soup mix.

- 7.Bake for 18-20 minutes. Potatoes should start to brown when done.
