I can't believe how much money my daughter spends on coffee.
This is the time of the year when her paycheck seems to migrate to the coffee stores for that Pumpkin Spice Latte coffee too.

Those fancy coffee places seem to make a lot of money especially when those seasonal coffee flavors show up.
I could not even imagine how much it costs to actually make one of those. I do know that you can pay close to six bucks every time you crave one of those trendy beverages.

By the way, have you checked out the calories in a store bought Pumpkin Spice Latte.
If you were to drink an entire whole milk pumpkin spice latte, it is over 400 calories of which, over 100 of those calories coming from fat. Wow!

What I like about making my own pumpkin spice Latte is that I know every ingredient that is going into it.
I am sensitive to sugar. Often the store bought Pumpkin Latte Spice drinks are loaded in sugar. The sugar can often over-take the taste of the drink in my opinion. When I make my own pumpkin spice latte, I know exactly which ingredients are going into it and how much of each of these ingredients as well.

Yep, there really is pumpkin in a pumpkin spice latte.

What makes a pumpkin spice latte unique is that it does include pumpkin in the recipe.
This time of the year, you can usually score a canned of pumpkin at a good price. I look for when canned pumpkin is a leader item at the grocery store and load up on it. I can easily use canned pumpkin in recipes throughout the holidays.

There are ways to cut calories in your homemade pumpkin spice latte.
I prefer to use a sugar alternative. I will also use skim milk while most recipes call for heavy cream or whole milk.

The big cheat for this recipe is to use the coffee that you have already made.
I know folks who will actually use espresso. It really is up to you and your needs for caffeine when it comes to what kind of coffee to use.

  • You can make this in a microwave using a microwave-safe bowl with vented plastic wrap (or you can make this on the stove- see next step). In your microwave bowl or stove top pot, combine the milk, pumpkin puree, sugar (or alternative), pumpkin pie spice and vanilla. Microwave until the milk is hot, 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.

  • If working on the stove and not the microwave, simply combine your milk, pumpkin, sugar (or alternative), pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla in a saucepan. Heat on medium, stirring as needed, until it is warm- usually about three minutes.
  • Using either methods, whisk your latte mix vigorously until the mixture appears foamy, about 30 seconds.

  • Optional- carefully pour your mixture into a blender and blend for a minute. It will be hot! You may need to use a pot holder to help you.

  • Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream. Top with additional pumpkin spice.
  • Enjoy!
