Italian Turkey Crock Pot Stew

The other day I was at the grocery store and they had this amazing deal on crock pots.

I scored a large 6 quart cooker for under $20.
It seems as if this is crock pot/slow cooker season, thanks to football tailgating season and the upcoming holiday parties.
I'm pretty excited to get my new toy working in my kitchen.

Italian Turkey Crock Pot Stew
This is the perfect turkey based stew for any tailgate or holiday party
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 pounds Ground Turkey
  • 1 small Onion-chopped
  • 26-28 ounces depending on can size Diced or Crushed tomatoes
  • 1 8 ounce can Tomato Sauce
  • 3/4 cup chopped Spinach
  • 2 12 ounce boxes Pasta- such as Rotini
  • 2 Cups Mozzarella Cheese Grated
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan or/and Romano Cheese
  • as needed Italian and seasonings of choice- optional
Instructions
The Turkey needs to be pre-cooked on the stove prior to adding it to the crock pot. Preheat your skillet with a bit of olive oil on medium and add your onion, stirring as needed. Use a larger skillet as you will be adding to this later on.Once the pan is warm, about 2 minutes, add your ground turkey. You will need to break up the turkey as you mix it around in the skillet.Once the turkey is no longer pink, drain the excess liquid from the skillet. Return the skillet with the turkey and onion to the stove.Add your tomatoes, spinach and desired seasonings- such as Italian herbs and pepper- to the skillet. Stir occasionally as this cooksWhile your skillet is at work, in a medium bowl, combine your cheeses mixing well. A large fork or using your hands is a good way to do this.Once your skillet mix seems well-blended, about ten minutes after the tomatoes were added, remove from heat.Add half of your skillet mixture to the bottom of your crock pot (I like to spray mine with non stick first). Evenly distribute 1 box of pasta over this. Add your cheese mix, evenly distributed, over the pasta. Distribute the remaining box of pasta over the cheese and then top with the remaining turkey mix over this. You can optionally top this with additional shredded or grated cheese and seasonings.Cover and heat on low for 4-6 hours. The pasta will cook in the crock pot. Yay!

  8. I loved this recipe, but came out a bit inconsistent with the noodles. Some were totally cooked and some weren't. I also wasn't sure when to add the tomato sauce, so I poured it in after I had loaded all over the other ingredients. When did you add the tomato sauce? Will still make it again!

  18. Great Recipe! I added a few ingridents: Minced Garlic, chopped bell peppers, sliced fresh mushrooms, Crushed Red pepper, extra small can of Rotella. since a few other comments mentioned needed more sauce. My family loved it! Thank you for posting. A new, family favorite :)
